Howdy! No, I'm not quite dead. Might have come close a couple of times, but otherwise I'm doing not so badly. School this term was probably the most work-intensive one I've ever had, and I don't think it's going to get better in the future, but it's over now, and things are going pretty well. I have a job in Calgary working for General Dynamics for the next 8 months (the only job in Ottawa I could have applied for were the ones I had when I was out there already, and I'm not taking them again. So sorry...), and I'm staying with my folks for the duration. Living with my parents again is going to be interesting, or at least different, after a year on my own, but the free rent argument is an awfully strong one.

I suppose that sums up the past 4 months that I've been out of Ottawa. I hope this "card", so to speak, finds everyone well and having a happy time over the holidays with friends and loved ones. Myself, I'm looking forward to some time off before going back to the grind, and getting caught up on all the stuff that I was deprived of during the last few months of activity, and hopefully all of you are as well.

As usual, I'm still blogging at my Blogger site, and hopefully I'll even remember to toss some words in this here space here.

Best wishes to everyone out east, and I pray you don't all collapse from cold and inclement weather. Have a very Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year!

w00t, there it is. Back in the West, baybee!!! It felt strangely nice to look out of the plane as it touched down and see the happy happy checkerboard-on-acid terrain of the plains. Not that the deciduousness of Ontario isn't nice, but it's not, well, home.

So yeah, flight went ok -- got to watch TV on the plane, which was new, and will be coming to all WestJet flights soon, which is kind of cool. I also got to see my parents' house in Calgary, which is also pretty cool, and got at least a chunk of my stuff back without event. I pick up most of the rest from the bus station tomorrow and then load up for my drive up to Edmonton on Wednesday. I'm still a little anxious about the place I'll be staying in, but I'm sure it will be ok. Roommate status is even more uncertain, but again, probably nothing I can't deal with.

Anyways, I just wanted to say thank you to everyone out there in Ottawa reading this. Seriously, you made my stay there far better than it would have been otherwise, and have given me more than ample reason to favour jobs out there than over here. I will try my hardest to come back, and at the very least, will tag along the next time my family goes to visit my aunt in Stittsville.

The highlights:

- First time I met ovalone, he went off on a rant about vi and how horrible it was. This was, of course, deliberately provoked by xiphia, since she finds it fun to watch him explode.

- Disbelieving thesheryl when she told me how old she was.

- Attempting to disbelieve the truth about Croque-BOOMs, and failing miserably.

- Drunken Stupid Monkey Fencing

- Sheep of Catan.

- mikepictor's comment about women and their vibrators that caused me to nearly collapse a lung laughing.

There's probably more, but those are the ones that pop out in my head at the moment. Take care out there in the land of politics, and while I technically won't leave due to this magical intarweb thingy, I will definitely be back to Ottawa eventually. Big hugs to everyone, and don't do anything I wouldn't do without a good deal of convincing.

So I've tossed my thoughts on Aliens vs. Predator, Doom 3, Spider-man 2 (the game), and Prince of Persia (again) up on PCV. Check it out here.

Also, I mentioned it before, and I'll probably mention it again on Wednesday with more details re: time and cover charge etc., but the Jimmy Swift Band is going to be playing at Maverick's on Wednesday (the 18th), and I will definitely be going to see them. They're a jam band from Halifax (I think...) and their style is kind of a rock/funk/dance hybrid. Personally, I call it awesome. I have recordings of a couple of their concerts, and there's some tracks on their website if you wanna check 'em out. If anyone else is interested, please let me know!

So my movie quotient is getting really low lately. I've seen a bunch (Loved Bubba Ho-tep!) but not in theaters. Therefore, I am putting forward the motion of going to see a movie or something tonight or tomorrow. What's playing?

Aliens vs. Predator. I know at least a few people want to see this.

Harold and Kumar. I still haven't seen this movie and it hurts me. You don't wanna see me get hurt, right? :P

Bourne Supremacy. I haven't seen the first, but I also hear that doesn't matter much.

Manchurian Candidate. Has me intruigued, and I would not object to seeing it, but I won't be heartbroken if I pass it up. (not like H&KGTWC)

So is anyone interested? Anyone?!

So I've decided that having a laptop for when I go to school would be slick. I do not, however, need a good laptop, as I will likely be upgrading my desktop system as well.* In terms of capability, all I really need is wireless networking (web, email, ssh, etc), media playback (movies, music) and basic office functions (word processing, spreadsheets, etc).

So. My question is this: is there anywhere in Ottawa where I can get a good deal on a used laptop. I'm trying to get something that can do what I just listed at a reasonable speed, but I want to get as much as possible while spending as little as possible.

Anyone know of anywhere?

* Parents are probably giving their computer to my sister who is moving out this year, so they need a computer. I can't let them have a top of the line system though, since for their purposes it would be wasted. Better that I have that power... :P

Was reading Robin D. Laws today, and he did a bit about neat games he found at Origins. They all sound cool (who wouldn't be up for Cthulhu Invictus - Lovecraft in the Roman Empire!), but in particular this jumped out at me:

Hero Games got a nod for Galactic Champions, rules for superhero play on the cosmic level of Jack Kirby and Jim Starlin comics. Rules for knocking planets out of orbit and so forth. Surprisingly, no one ever got around to doing this sub-genre before.

Bleck. I have 15 days of work left, and they cannot go past soon enough. On the other hand, I have so much to do in those days that I might need every minute available. Bleck, I say.

(Sloooooowly) Getting ready to move back to Edmonton. I have a lead on a place to stay, but so far my luck at finding somewhere to live when I go back has been limited. I haven't exactly been searching hard though, so that's no real surprise. I'm really dragging my heels about this, mostly because it means I need to do stuff. I should probably feel bad about being this lazy, but I don't. Meh. I'm also going to have to start packing up my stuff and figuring out how I'm going to get it all back home. Most of my stuff I either already know how it's going to go, or I don't have to worry about it, except for the TV, which is probably too heavy to ship reasonably, and cost me money, so I'm no going to just throw it out.

This is comforting:

Just saw THE VILLAGE. The talented M Night Shyamalan is falling prey to George Lucas syndrome. He doesn't know when he's going astray and because he's hugely successful now he's surrounded by yes-men with brown rings around their lips, apparently--nothing else could explain how the clumsy dialogue in the film got past everyone involved in the production...till it got to the critics and the public. SHyamalan was trying to create some kind of old fashioned lingo to set his village apart, and as a kind of red herring--but he's just not a good enough writer of English for that. And as my wife pointed out, the characters are constantly speaking of the supposed monsters in the woods around the village as “they who must not be spoken of“--they speak of they who must not be spoken of with every third breath. Other people on the production must've realized that the 'surprises' in act three were fairly obvious from early on. Did anyone speak to Shyamalan about this? No. He needed another writer, and an editor, just as Lucas did on his 'prequel' Star Wars pictures--and neither got what they needed because no one wants to tell the emperor he's naked. This happens to auteur after auteur. It's happened to Woody Allen too, I suspect. But the public, you notice, won't coddle them.

I was looking forward to this movie, but now I'm not so sure. This is the second bad review I've seen, and I haven't even been actively looking yet...

My weekend has been posted to the Victim. Highlights include:

- Monster Magnet's new album Monolithic Baby! is righteously awesome. Top 3 material, but I don't know where in said 3 yet.

- Busker Fest was awesome. Best stuff was on Sunday (didn't go Monday) on account of weather. Personal faves:
** New York Street Boys - Stomp!-like drumming
** Ash Circle - fire breathing and rope-fu
** Aytahn - contact juggling, mouth juggling and flaming baton twirling
I wish I could have seen Bike Boy, since apparantly he was REALLY cool. I heard he juggled chainsaws...

- Settlers + Red Bull is awesome. Holy crap is that stuff potent. Monster is the same thing as Red Bull, only in a bigger can and carbonated. When they say it gives you wings, they mean you really get high off the stuff. Highly recommended, but within reason.

So yeah. Weekend was awesome. :)

I don't know about any of you, but I LOVE street performers. If I could be one, I would. The juggling, the tricks, IT IS ALL AWESOME!!! gnar.

So yeah, Busker Festival is this weekend. Can't speak for anyone else, but I am going to try and spend as much time on Sparks St. as I can. Probably be down there Friday evening and as much of Saturday as I can manage (barring things like sleeping in, succumbing to laziness, etc.). Or at least that's my plan. Said plan is far more likely to be stuck to if other people get involved, so if you feel like going down this weekend, gimme a shout!
